When should you visit the Caribbean Islands?
The best time to visit the Caribbean
For many guests, the best time to cruise the Caribbean is between December and April. During these months, the weather is warm yet comfortable, with gentle breezes and plenty of sunshine. It’s an ideal moment to swap winter coats for lighter layers and enjoy long days exploring colourful ports, tranquil beaches, and vibrant island culture. The Caribbean enjoys a tropical climate throughout the year, with average temperatures around 28°C. The driest months typically fall between February and May, as well as October and December, when rainfall is less frequent, and skies are often beautifully clear.
Of course, every time of year brings its own appeal. Whether you’re seeking sunshine in the depths of winter, quieter shores outside the busiest travel periods, or the chance to experience the islands’ lush landscapes after tropical rain showers, the Caribbean offers something special in every season.
Caribbean weather throughout the year
Caribbean weather in January to March
Perfect for: guests who are eager to escape the winter chill.
Winter is in full swing across Europe and North America, but the Caribbean offers a welcome escape from cold mornings and grey skies. The earliest months of the year are among the most pleasant times to visit the Caribbean, with clear skies, warm seas, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the region’s beautiful beaches. You can look forward to sunshine, warm temperatures, and a refreshing swim in beautifully warm Caribbean waters.
Expect temperatures in the mid to high 20s in January and February, and March’s afternoon temperatures will hover around 30°C, giving you a fantastic reason to watch the world go by from a sun lounger or cool off in your ship’s swimming pools.
With a variety of ports on every Caribbean voyage, you can traverse the region in comfort, with the luxury of only unpacking once. Montego Bay and Belize in the western Caribbean are ideal places to visit, benefiting from high temperatures and minimal rainfall. In the eastern Caribbean, Barbados, and St Lucia combine sunshine with light sea breezes, offering natural relief from the heat. With so many options when sailing to the Caribbean, choosing where to visit can be exciting, though not always easy.
One additional thing to note about the Caribbean is that, despite the warm days, it can become cooler in the evenings, so packing a light layer or two is a good idea for when the sun settles and the evening’s entertainment begins.
Caribbean weather in April to June
Perfect for: guests who want to avoid the busiest travel season.
From March into April, the Caribbean begins to move beyond its busiest travel season. Popular destinations may still be busy, but our Shore Experience experts can help you discover ideal spots to explore, whether you’re interested in local history, regional cuisine, or relaxing beside the sea.
Southern islands such as Barbados, St Lucia, or Aruba continue to offer beautifully warm waters, ideal for swimming. Areas like Willemstad, Curaçao, and Oranjestad, Aruba, will often stay warmer and drier than some of the more northern islands.
As April turns to May, rain becomes more frequent in the Caribbean. By June, the region begins to transition into its wetter season, which can, on occasions, extend into November. The humidity rises during these months, as does the temperature; however, conditions vary depending on the islands you visit.
Fewer people visit the Caribbean at this time of year, meaning the islands will be relatively quiet in comparison to the dry season. The sun still appears regularly, despite the risk of rain, and you’re likely to experience hours of dry weather each day between the showers.
Caribbean weather in July to September
Perfect for: guests who prefer exploring without the crowds.
July to September are some of the quietest months for travel to the Caribbean, particularly by sea. Temperatures are typically high during these months, and tropical showers become more common across many islands. While sunshine is still likely, tropical storms are more common.
Caribbean weather in October to December
Perfect for: guests who want to escape early winter for something warmer.
By October, rainfall across much of the Caribbean begins to ease, and sunny days become more frequent, giving you more time to explore the islands and experience their culture.
November and December are popular months for guests to visit the Caribbean, thanks to the return of reliable sunshine and gentle breezes that offer the perfect accompaniment to time spent by the sea.
High 20s and low 30s are common throughout November and December, with humidity easing slightly and making the days feel pleasantly warm. Afternoons can be spent relaxing on beautiful beaches, just a short stroll from where your Cunard Queen docks, and things start to get busier on the popular shores of Antigua and Barbados.
Our most popular places to visit as we head back into the drier months are the northern Caribbean islands, the hottest and sunniest at this time of year. Pick a voyage that visits all the destinations on your wish list, and allow us to take care of the rest.
With Christmas around the corner, many guests choose this time of year to get away for one last trip in the sun. If a Christmas escape is your idea of the perfect gift, a festive Caribbean voyage can be a wonderful way to see out the year.
Best time to visit for wildlife watching
Some wildlife species appear in the Caribbean at specific times of year. If you’ve always wanted to see turtles in their natural habitat, the nesting season between June and November offers the best chance of spotting these remarkable creatures.
Whales and dolphins are most commonly spotted between January and March, when many local boat tours offer trips to take you closer to these gentle giants. Dolphins are often seen in the waters around islands such as Turks and Caicos, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic, while humpback whales migrate near southern islands such as Curaçao, Aruba, and Bonaire, between January and April. Whether you see these from shore or from the decks of your Cunard Queen, these encounters can become unforgettable highlights of a Caribbean voyage.
