Visa Requirements
Indian citizens generally do not need a visa to enter Svalbard. However, because most travellers reach Svalbard through mainland Norway, a Schengen visa is required for transit through Norway. Always check the latest entry and transit requirements before travelling.
Major Airports
Svalbard Airport, Longyear (LYR) is the main airport serving Svalbard. Most international travellers connect through Oslo or Tromsø before flying to Longyearbyen, the main settlement and gateway to Svalbard cruises and Arctic expeditions.
Best time
to visit Svalbard
June to September (Summer)
The best time to visit Svalbard for expedition cruises and Arctic wildlife. The Midnight Sun provides 24-hour daylight, while retreating sea ice creates excellent opportunities to spot polar bears, walruses, whales, reindeer and seabirds.
March to May (Spring)
As daylight returns, Svalbard’s snow-covered landscapes become easier to explore. This season is ideal for snowmobile and dog-sledding adventures, with frozen fjords, Arctic wildlife and excellent opportunities for photography.
October to February (Winter)
Svalbard enters its dark polar night, creating a magical winter landscape beneath the Northern Lights. With limited daylight and challenging conditions, this is less suited to cruising but offers a unique experience for those seeking Svalbard’s winter wilderness.
